Happy Tail: Hugh

Hugh or ‘Huey,’ as he’s fondly referred to by his generous adopter, Sarah, was born in her backyard to a stray mama who set up her litter of kittens in Sarah’s garden. Upon Sarah’s discovery of the little feline family on Labour Day weekend of 2018, Hugh immediately popped out of some foliage to say hello! “He was the tiniest, boldest, and hungriest of the group,” Sarah remembers fondly. “I was instantly attached to him.”

Having considered adding a third cat into her home, Sarah saw the litter of kittens appearing in her backyard as a sign. She contacted ACR and credits them for supporting her in caring for the little kittens until they were old enough to be safely rescued and relocated into foster homes. Between the summer and fall, Hugh spent time in the care of an ACR volunteer foster, Kelsey, who adored his company. Hugh loved to follow Kelsey around her house and would often try to swipe some food off her plate!

Just in time to celebrate Halloween, Hugh became a permanent member of Sarah’s family and returned to her home for good. “He quickly made himself at home,” Sarah says. “We spent about a month slowly introducing him to our two tabbies, Barney and Beatrice, who he was desperate to befriend.” Sarah happily shares that Hugh eventually won the duo over and the cats have been a close-knit trio ever since. “He’s remained pretty tiny, but very healthy, with a self-assured personality that has never changed,” says Sarah.

Hugh has always been a friendly cat who enjoys meeting new people and is rarely afraid. Sarah describes him as the hungriest cat she has ever met! Now, Hugh has an endless supply of nutritious food and a forever home with Sarah and his new siblings. “My favourite ‘Hugh memory’ is of his first night of full freedom in our house,” recalls Sarah. “He and our cat Barney became best friends in the span of about an hour,” she says.

When reflecting on the happiness that Hugh was brought into her home, Sarah is thankful for her connection to ACR. “I really can’t say enough about the amazing support ACR provided us through the process of caring for our backyard cat family, fostering little Hugh and coordinating his adoption.”

Less than two years later, Hugh is thriving thanks to the kindness of Sarah, Kelsey, and ACR’s volunteers. “He’s been a wonderful addition to our family,” says Sarah. “We’re so glad ACR was able to help Hugh and his siblings find the forever homes they deserve!”
